With the compliments
of the Apostolic Nunciature
Mary Farrelly and Sean Cleary have been awarded the Benemerenti Medal and Certificate for their services to the Parish and the Diocese of Galway.
The Benemerenti Medal is the highest honour awarded by the Pope to lay persons in recognition of their long and exceptional service to the church.
The medals have been blessed by Pope Francis and were forwarded to the parish through the Papal Nuncio. Each medal is inscribed with the word “Benemerenti”, derived from the Latin, meaning ‘to a well deserved person’, and it hangs on a yellow and white ribbon in the Papal colours.
Previous recipients of the Benemerenti Medals were Pat Conroy and the late Stephen Collins.
